5.9 SLEE Lifecycle
The SLEE specification defines the operational lifecycle of a SLEE. The operational lifecycle of the Rhino SLEE conforms
with the specified lifecycle as illustrated in Figure 5.1.

Figure 5.1: Rhino SLEE lifecycle
When the first node of a cluster is booted, it performs a number of initialisation tasks then enters the Stopped state. The
operational state is changed by invoking the start() and stop() methods on the Slee Management MBean. Additional nodes that
enter the Rhino SLEE cluster assume the operational state of the existing cluster members once initialised, so that all nodes in
the cluster always share the same operational state.
Management operations can only be invoked on a cluster node once that node has completed initialisation and has entered a
valid state.
Each state in the Rhino SLEE lifecycle state machine is discussed below, as are the transitions between these states.
5.9.1 The Stopped State
The Rhino SLEE is configured and initialised, ready to be started. This means that active resource adaptor entities are loaded
and initialised, and SBBs corresponding to active services are loaded and ready to be instantiated. However the entire event-
driven subsystem is idle. Resource adaptor entities and the SLEE are not actively producing events, and the event router is not
processing work. SBB entities are not created in this state.
